What Deficiencies Cause Fatigue?

February 21, 2020

Fatigue

Does getting through the day constantly feel like an uphill battle for you? Do you feel like you are eating well and are exercising, but somehow, your efforts do not produce positive effects when it comes to your energy levels? If you answered yes, you may have a vitamin deficiency that is responsible for your symptoms.

Here are some common vitamins and minerals that help reduce fatigue. You may be feeling tired or sluggish and lacking energy because of a deficiency in one or more of them.

B Vitamins

There are several B vitamins — B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B12, folic acid, and biotin — and all are necessary to convert the food you eat into energy. Your B vitamin needs may vary according to what your body needs, which means the same amounts are not always sufficient for everyone. Moreover, a deficiency of just a single B vitamin can affect the entire biochemical process of energy conversion and production. Ultimately, the mitochondria will not be able to convert the energy your body needs with a deficiency in vitamin B. Vitamin B is available in supplement form, which can help you replenish your levels. Talk to a doctor about the specific supplements you should take.

Iron

Fatigue is a symptom of anemia, which is a lack of iron and hemoglobin in the body. It occurs when red blood cells do not carry enough oxygen to tissues due to a lack of hemoglobin. Symptoms of anemia include feeling tired, having low energy, and experiencing shortness of breath with minimal effort. To boost your iron supply, you need a diet rich in iron that consists of eggs, beans, and red meat.

Anemia requires a clinical diagnosis. Furthermore, taking iron supplements should be done under the guidance of your doctor to properly address the deficiency in a safe way.

Vitamin D

A vitamin D deficiency is another cause of low energy and fatigue, since the lack of it can decrease bone and muscle strength. Another symptom of vitamin D deficiency is being in a depressed mood.

You synthesize vitamin D from the food you eat when you are exposed to sunlight. Foods rich in vitamin D are fortified milk, juice, cereals, cheese, eggs, beef liver, and fatty fish such as tuna and salmon. Supplementation of vitamin D, especially for people who mostly stay indoors during the winter, is highly recommended.
